Chelsea is dominating the international media today. After N'Golo Kanté, Hakim Ziyech, Edouard Mendy, and Kalidou Koulibaly signed contracts in Saudi Arabia, Fabrizio Romano announces that a domestic transfer is also set to take place. Arsenal is acquiring Kai Havertz for €70 million.
A transfer for Havertz has been in the works for a while. Arsenal made an approach to Stamford Bridge last month and was given an asking price of €87 million. However, the Premier League runner-up considered that amount too high. Now, an agreement has been reached after all: Havertz will make the move for €70 million, with additional bonuses potentially raising the amount to €75 million.
This means that the 24-year-old attacker won't have to relocate. The distance between Arsenal and Chelsea's stadiums is about 10 kilometers. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid were also interested in signing him. The Spanish club was not willing to go beyond €58.5 million, while Bayern did not make a concrete offer.
Havertz was a key player last season under all three coaches appointed by Chelsea. In total, he played 47 matches in the 2022/2023 season under Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter and Frank Lampard. He only scored nine goals, but that still proved enough to convince Arsenal to bring him in. The German can play as a center striker, right winger or attacking midfielder.
Chelsea is barely incurring a loss due to the high transfer fee. Havertz joined the club from Bayer Leverkusen in 2020 for €80 million. In total, Havertz has scored 32 goals in 139 matches and provided 15 assists. His most important goal in the blue shirt came on May 29, 2021, when he scored the only goal in the Champions League final against Manchester City. His successor at Stamford Bridge is already in place, as Chelsea bought Christopher Nkunku yesterday for €60 million.
